Here's another burlesque costume I'm making. This one is for me, so the budget is much, much tighter!

Design sketch for turquoise rhinestoned costume

For this costume, I began with a "Chelsea" corset & matching ruffle bra, in turquoise & black, from Versatile Fashions.

The "turquoise" turned out to be more of a pale aqua---a great retro colour, but not as vivid as I wanted. So I used several fabric dye markers (Seta Skrib - Turquoise) to hand-ink it to a strong turquoise colour. The original colour is still visible in the second row of ruffles on the bra, which I've left as-is, for contrast.

Lacking a "Swarovski" budget, I opted for the less expensive Preciosa crystal rhinestones, in Blue Zircon AB, in size 30ss (for the corset, gloves, pasties and bra cups) and 20ss for the bra ruffles. Most people don't know this, but with their larger flat top in relation to the side faceting, Preciosa crystals actually sparkle brighter onstage than Swarovskis (with a smaller flat top relative to side faceting) do.

Although my sketch calls for a feather boa bustle, I'm actually making a fabric bustle---that budget again!

I've never made rhinestoned pasties or bugle-bead tassels before, so this was a bit of an experiment. But it worked beautifully, if I do say so myself!

I used buckram for the base, which I covered with leftover fabric from the bustle followed by Preciosa rhinestones (Blue Zircon AB & a few Vitrail Green, in 30ss) and some Swarovski Capri Blue AB 20ss stones I had stashed away.

I made the tassels out of metallic bugle beads, with a few seed beads, in Teal and Turquoise. I then used jump rings to attach them to the pasties, to give them enough freedom to really twirl! (And yes, I DO know how to twirl them!)
