Historical, Retro, Period, Vintage---whatever you call this look, the key to achieving it is to do it completely:  garments, shoes, jewellery, hat, gloves, purse, make-up, hair (or wig)...

...and I can help you!

circa 1933

I made the dress and belt.  The hat and gloves were originally purchased in the 1980s, but they're very much in the style of the 1930s.  The wig perfectly mimics the very fashionable bleached-blonde, fingerwaved coiffures of the early 1930s.  Even the shoes, thick stockings and pearl jewellery are in keeping with the era.  The final touch is the carefully researched make-up---including thin, pencilled brows; and red, modified-cupid's-bow lips.

circa 1883

I made this gown out of 2 matching drapery fabrics, one with a jacquard pattern of stars (for the bodice, bustle and drapings) and one without. For durability, the gown was lined in poly-cotton drapery lining. The trimmings also came from the drapery department. I had the ringlet wig in my collection, but to make it more authentic to the style of the period, I used a hairnet to make it more head-hugging. I found the perfect jewellery in a little accessory shop in the Sheppard subway station. The boots were made by Nine West in the early 1990s, and they've been in my collection ever since.
